3rd Annual Discovery Arts Camp

Welcome Elementary School June 23 - 27
Grace Episcopal Church July 28 - August 1

The third annual Discovery Arts Camp, sponsored by Communities in Schools of Lexington/Davidson County and member churches of its Communities of Faith Committee, provides an opportunity to expose children to the arts through a multicultural experience. The idea originated when the Rev. Bonnie Duckworth, director of the Arts Discovery Camp and ordained deacon with Grace Episcopal Church, proposed the idea to fellow members of the Communities of Faith Committee in 2006.

Rising 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will participate in three arts disciplines. All children will participate in an art session. Students may choose two activities from the following: Violin, Guitar, Piano, Dance, and Drama.

The first year, 2006, one week of camp was offered at Grace Episcopal Church in downtown Lexington.  The following year in addition to the week of camp at Grace Church, a second week was added in the county at Welcome Elementary school.

Communities in Schools children who are identified as having potential in one of the disciplines can receive scholarship money to continue private lessons.  Darrin Winston from Lexington received a scholarship to pursue violin lessons. Below is a link to the article and video about Darrin.

THE GREAT AWAKENING: REVIVING FAITH & POLITICS

Location: Commons Room
Cost: $10
Participants furnish their own book

“The Great Awakening: Reviving Faith & Politics in a Post Religious Right America,” by Jim Wallis, speaks of two great hungers in our world today--the hunger for spirituality and the hunger for social justice. This class will explore, using “The Great Awakening” as a guide, how spiritual renewal will likely be a necessary part of social change, and how perhaps only genuine spiritual revival can spark social and political transformation.
Facilitators: The Rev. Dr. Tom King, The Rev. Bonnie Duckworth, Ms. Susan Terrell

Vestry Approves $2,000 to Refurbish
Nursery over Summer Months

Beginning Sunday, June 8, the nursery will be held in the
men's vesting room in the Undercroft.

This will allow for a much needed overhaul of the nursery to take place. During this time some plumbing repairs will be made, new flooring put in and a general spruce up of the walls and furnishings.  Many of the toys and books are old and in disrepair. New items will be purchased for the nursery.

During this time the men's choir robes and acolyte robes will be placed on the coat rack near the restrooms. We appreciate the choir members and acolytes understanding during this transition period.

Toys and some furnishings will be brought to the vesting room to make it appealing for the young children to use during church services.

Funding for this project comes from ear-marked income provided by the Blanche Byerly bequest.  We are grateful for this gift that allows us to undertake occasional projects that our budget will not accommodate.

Updated Nursery will be re-opened on September 14
