Grace Episcopal Church
Discernment Process

Prayer for Discernment
Loving God, You call us together into community, where together we seek your voice in the voice of others. We ask you now to lead us, accompany us, and direct us, as we affirm our gifts and look to the future.  Grant us perception, faithfulness, and joy that we may hear your still small voice.  And then, give us the courage to walk with you along the way.  In the name of Christ Jesus who is the shepherd and pastor of our souls.  Amen.

Town Meeting

Monday, September 8, 6:30 in the undercroft
Light refreshments will be served and a nursery will be provided.

The Site Development Committee saw the first preliminary drawings from the architects Peter Freeman and John Kennett.  The Committee was extremely pleased that the architects covered about 99% of all the wants, needs and concerns that parishioners expressed earlier in the year. (See below for a list of some of those ideas)

The Town Meeting will be the first opportunity for the congregation to see the proposed 50% plans: floor plans, 3-D elevation, sketches and a computer generated view of the church campus. This meeting will be the time for open discussion with the architects before they go back to the drawing board to put the finishing touches on the plan. They will then present the 95% proposal at the Congregation Meeting on October 6.

The Committee has been tremendously impressed with the creativity and innovation of Peter Freeman and John Kennett.  They have listened well to the needs and desires of Grace Church.

ADVENT-URE Begins/Continues

Grace Church has always been mission-minded, and right now, we are continuing a process that has already taken several forms.  Twenty years ago, we moved into our “new” worship space, thanks to the planning of countless people.  We have also come to appreciate and value even more our historic spaces, celebrating the chapel’s recent inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is particularly important during this season of Advent to realize that, as a church with a mission, we are constantly on a journey with exciting opportunities.  The Sacred Spaces Team recently helped us identify maintenance and preservation needs of our buildings as well as clarify ways for the buildings to serve both the congregation and the community.  Some of these issues have been addressed; others are pending; some have been postponed.  The Sacred Spaces Team and the Vestry realized that our physical buildings could be tied together more effectively with special attention to access and safety.  Changes might involve modifying some parts of the existing buildings, always with particular attention to the beauty and continuity of the work that has gone on before.

At exactly this point, we learned about the resources of the Episcopal Church Foundation, a group that has worked with many congregations.  Currently, under the direction of consultant Andi Tillman, we are contacting architects to put our dreams into a preliminary plan.  In order to give the architect all of the best possible information, meetings with the people who use different parts of the church in different ways will identify as many needs as possible.

Here’s what we need from YOU as we enter the discernment process:

1.  Participate:  As you are invited to meet with different groups, please attend!!!! (If you     can’t physically be there, send your input to the convener.)

2.  Dream:  Think of as many potential wants/needs for our space in terms of your ministry as you see it now and as you imagine it will grow in the next generation.

3.  Pray:  This process is another effort by Grace Church to act out our ministry in the world.  To do that, we want to be intentional about discerning what God is calling us to accomplish.

Watch this space.  Watch the Sunday bulletin.  Watch the Grace Notes.  Watch the bulletin board in the Undercroft.  An informational letter will go out to the congregation the week of November 27.     HOWEVER, if something seems unclear or you think of something else you would like to share, please also know that you are encouraged and invited to contact any member of the Communications Committee.  Thank you for your input and guidance on behalf of us all.
