NEWS YOU CAN USE

NOVEMBER 2008

November is one of our most favorite months at The Children’s School! We will finish up our numbers unit by the end of the month. Older children should be able to identify, count and sort numbers 1-10 and beyond, while, younger children should have mastered numbers 1-5. We have also been learning and reviewing basic shapes and colors. We will begin our study of Native Americans in the “Big Room.” Ms. Jane’s 3 year olds will be joining us for stories and music.

It is important that children embrace their heritage and the diversity of our American culture. Our units leading up to Thanksgiving enable us to talk about what our country was like in the 1600’s and what events led up to the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth. We will also talk about the many things we are thankful for-our families, friends, school, food and things in nature. This is a wonderful opportunity for you as families to “count your blessings” one of which is your child(ren). Verbalizing this at family time is a wonderful way to help us all feel gratitude for our many blessings.

Please note that due to Special Olympics, we will not be going to the Y on Friday, November 14. Please report to school at 9:00 a.m.

If you signed up to help with Thanksgiving a note is attached of what and when to send in your items. We observe several special snacks in the Big Room that go along with our Native American and Pilgrim units. All children will help prepare and eat a traditional Thanksgiving feast on Mon, Nov. 24th and Tues. Nov. 25th.

Thanksgiving holidays will begin on Wed. Nov. 26 th , with school resuming on Mon. Dec. 1st.

If you wish to order school apparel for your child or family members, please remember to return the completed form with payment no later than Tuesday, November 18, 2008. These clothing items will make terrific Christmas gifts!

December is fast approaching and I would like to make you aware of a couple of things. Each year our school collects canned and non-perishable foods and personal items to share with those less fortunate. This is a wonderful time for us to put Christmas in a proper perspective. Christ instructs us that when “we do for the least of these” we do unto him. The children will decorate and pack boxes that will be delivered to Crisis Ministries and Pastor’s Pantry. Please be prepared to assist your child with this project (beginning the week after Thanksgiving until Christmas break) and use this as a lesson to be thankful for our food and the abundance with which each of us has so richly been blessed. Also, please note that we as a staff do not expect Christmas gifts. If you feel inclined to give a gift this Christmas, please consider giving an item from our Christmas Wish List that will come home as part of your December newsletter or a tax deductible monetary gift to either the school’s general fund or Scholarship Fund. You can designate your gift either way. Again, this is not an expectation for our families. Please note the important dates listed. We as a staff

are so thankful for each one of you and how your precious children bless our lives daily!
